Ice skating is a wonderful wintertime activity in Amsterdam. Locals hope for super cold weather to freeze the canals for a really special Amsterdam ice skating experience. That doesn’t happen too often but luckily there are ice skating rinks in Amsterdam where you can still strap on your skates for a spin on the ice.
Ice Skating in Amsterdam
Amsterdam ice skating is a fun activity for the whole family. These Amsterdam ice skating spots will have rental skates in all sizes as well as special pushable props for children just learning to skate. Adults might want to try them too!
Here are a few places to ice skate in Amsterdam in 2015-16.
Ice Skating at Museumplein
One of the most picturesque places to put on your skates in Amsterdam, the ice skating rink at Museumplein comes complete with a small replica of the Magere Brug and a view of the Rijksmuseum. Check the website of Ice*Amsterdam for more information about special events and activities.
Ice Skating at Leidseplein
A small skating rink is set up every year in the touristy heart of the city at Leidseplein, bringing holiday cheer to the area with a ton of twinkle lights. You’ll also find stands with wintertime treats like poffertjes and oliebollen to sustain you. Have you sampled these Dutch delicacies?
Afterward pop over to De Balie to warm up or head to Jopen Proeflokaal or Cafe de Spuyt for a craft beer.
Ice Skating at Westerpark
There is a cute indoor skating rink set up next to Pacific Parc in Westerpark. Bring the kids for some holiday fun and afterward hit up Pacific Parc or Brouwerij Troost for a beer. In the evening when the kiddies go home the skating rink is a good place to warm up before hitting the dance floor. It’s open until 22:00 most nights.
Skating over Amsterdam’s frozen canals is a magical winter experience – made even more special by the fact that it’s not possible every year. If the conditions look right, boat traffic is blocked from certain canals to allow the water to freeze. Fingers crossed that the same happens this year!
